The Quick Reference Remote Control
10 buttons: 6 press on you. 4 you press.
This page explains every part of the Remote Control System™ in plain words, so you know what you are looking at the next time the moment arrives.
Your remote control has 10 buttons: 6 press on you. 4 you press.
6 buttons press on you. They are not choices. They are the buttons that get pressed when a moment arrives faster than your judgement does. They are the rust-coloured ones.
4 buttons you press. They are yours. They are the turquoise ones, and they are how the remote control comes back to your hand.
The load is the weight you carry when the moment arrives: the endless questions since 7am, the meeting that ran over, the message you have not answered. Pressure is the load. The other 5 are how the load shows up in you.
Naming which one is running is free, and it’s the first step. It’s also most of what people have never had words for.
All 10 buttons, each with a line saying what it looks like when it lands, are on the remote control itself.
Underneath the 10 buttons sits a bar. The Battery Charge is why the same moment costs you almost nothing on a Saturday and costs you far more on a Wednesday.
It’s not motivation and it’s not willpower. It’s capacity, and it moves during the day for reasons as ordinary as sleep, food, noise and how many decisions you have already made before 11am.
If you have ever typed “decision fatigue” into a search bar, this is the everyday version: capacity spent one small decision at a time.
There is a marker near the bottom of the bar. Below it you still work. Everything just costs more. Knowing you are under that line is the difference between a bad day and a bad decision.
The 4 events are when it happens: The Moment, The Handover™, The Gap, The Return™.
Naming the 4 events is free. What to do inside each one is in the book.
RCS™ framework sequence
Pause · Notice · Reset · Decide
4 steps, in that order, every time. The order is the method.
Naming is free. Learning is the book. It teaches the RCS™ framework sequence and the 10 buttons. Practising is the workbook. Catching the Moment is the app. That’s the Remote Control System™ in action.
This page names the 10 buttons as a shared language to use with the people you work with, live with and do life with. What to do when each button presses is in the book: 15 chapters. 15 real moments. The workbook is where you practise them.
The shared language is yours. Save it, print it and share it with the people you work with, live with and do life with.
Attribution is all that is asked in return. Name the Remote Control System™ when you use its shared language, its framework sequence or its buttons.
